Fire & Safety

Fire Extinguishers

Every home should have at least one current fire extinguisher. Commercial buildings are required to have two or more and are required to have yearly inspection.

911

If you called 911, would emergency services be able to find your house or building? Your house or building must be numbered as well as the driveway to your home. By law, numbers must be a minimum 3 inches.

Burning Brush

NYS DEC Local burn permits will be available from the Town Clerk at 1360 Route 22, beginning May 16, 2013. Residents are reminded that leaf burning is never allowed and burning brush is not allowed on Sundays and holidays.

Important Safety Reminders

  • New York State requires a yearly inspection to all public use and hazardous occupancies.
  • Commercial properties are required to have their alarm and sprinkler systems checked every six months.
  • Do you have a fire or burglar alarm system in your house? All alarm systems require a permit that are issued and maintained by this office.
  • Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at least once a year.

Knox Box

As of January 2003, all commercial buildings are required to have a Knox Box. A Knox Box secures your premises keys for the Fire Department use only. It eliminates the needless, costly forced entry damage to your doors. It allows immediate entry without delay or waiting for a key holder. Knox Boxes are available only through the Fire Inspector's Office.

Other Inspections

Other inspections performed are:
  • Fireplaces
  • Gas installations
  • HVAC systems
  • New boilers and replacements
  • Tank removals and installations
